When the clock struck 12, we brought in the new year, and we woke with a hangover. Tory Lanez released two mixtapes on the first day of the new year, setting the standard for music in 2017.
The Canadian hip-hop artist released The New Toronto 2 and the Chixtape IV. As follow-ups to the New Toronto and Chixtape III, which were released on Christmas 2015, Lanez new mixtapes are produced by Lanez himself and his close collaborator, Play Picasso. He also had assistance from Chicago producer C-Sick and Araabmuzik. The mixtapes also included features from A$AP Ferg, Rick Ross, Nyce, and Jacquees.
The New Toronto 2 bring the signature Lanez sound. Bringing some club hits and songs you can chill to, Lanez stepped his game up from The New Toronto. Aside from "Bal Harbour" and "Super Freak", "New Year $auce Baby" is a good song to start the new year with.
The Chixtape IV is a mixtape filled with modern lyrics mixed with nostalgia. Each song includes a sample of R&B songs from the late 90’s/early 2000’s including Aaliyah’s “I Don’t Wanna”, R. Kelly’s “Ignition”, and Pretty Ricky’s “Grind On Me”. Lanez caused a social media frenzy when his song, “Proud Family” surfaced and started circulating on Facebook. The song, produced by Lanez, Play Picasso, and Coop Chardonnay, sampled the theme song to the Disney Channel cartoon, The Proud Family, in a clever way. I predict this is going to be one of the biggest songs of the year.
