4 Albums You Shouldn’t Sleep On

Summer is officially over, and today is the first day of fall. We only have a little over three months until 2016 is over, but before we enter 2017, there are some albums we need to discuss. There have been so amazing albums released in 2016, but some of them haven’t been getting the recognition they deserve. These albums have some of the best lyrics, symbolism, and production quality I’ve heard in years. Listening to these projects, there were a few songs that I believe could have been top ten singles or at least a successful club banger. Here’s a list of albums that you need to take a listen to right now.

1. Mila J 213-EP

While her younger sister, Jhene Aiko, brings a cool, calm, and collective spirit to her music, her older sister, Mila J brings that L.A heat and attitude to match. Her EP, 213, was released in June of this year and each song is relatable and can make us feel sexy. Her rendition of Sade’s “The Sweetest Taboo”, and songs like “Me & You” and “Next Up” make you want to dance with someone special, while her hit single, “Kickback”, is the perfect after party mood setter. You can check out the video for “Kickback” on YouTube now, and check out her EP now.

2. Tory Lanez I Told You

You might know Tory Lanez for his hit, “Say It”, but the Ontario rapper takes his passion and displays it on this album. Released on August 16th, this album is an eloquent story of Lanez’s troubled upbringing and his rise to fame and success. I Told You is the musical soundtrack to the underdog in all of us.

3. Eric Bellinger Eric B For President: Term 1

Justin Bieber, Chris Brown, Usher…just a few of artist who’ve had their hit songs written by Eric Bellinger. Another L.A native who’s steaming up the R&B music scene, Bellinger released his mixtape on September 9th. Parallel to Bryson Tiller’s T R A P S O U L, Eric mixes hip-hop and trap beats with smooth R&B vocals. Songs like “Remind Her” definitely remind us why Eric is one of the most sought after songwriters, while “My Check” is a club/hustler’s anthem. Oh, and for all you Frank Ocean fans, you'll love the way Eric samples "Thinkin About You" in his song, "Drive By".

4. Mac Miller The Divine Feminine

Releasing his fourth studio album on September 16th, Mac Miller takes a different approach to his music and his views on relationships. The eccentric Philadelphia rapper who’s had a colorful side to him, created an album that talks about the importance of learning from a woman (and it helps that his girlfriend, Ariana Grande, is featured on the album on the smooth, neo-soul track “My Favorite Part”). Once again, Mac Miller shows how much his musical genius is expanding with another album that will be on repeat for a while.
