Last night, VH1 aired Hip Hop Honors and honored a handful of groundbreaking female MCs. Salt-N-Pepa was honored for their sisterhood and unity as the first female hip hop group while Queen Latifah was honored for her feminism and women empowerment as well as her being the first female rapper to transition from rapper to award winning actress. Missy Elliott was honored for her remarkable work as a rapper and producer and for her innovative choreography and music videos while Lil’Kim was honored for her bold fashions and raunchy lyrics. The show was packed with celebrity appearances and stellar tributes from Dej Loaf, Eve (who was also the host), Trina, Diddy, and MC Lyte. In case you didn’t catch the show, I’m going to give a taste of the best parts.
The show started off on an important note, a moment of #BlackGirlMagic from two of the founders of #BlackLivesMatter
Then the show opened with a tribute to Missy Elliott, and of course, they had to break out in choreography…
And Missy had to pay tribute to her fans and one of her closest friends
Queen Latifah gave it up one time to God
And slayed with her single “Come Into My House”
And of course the group she discovered, Naughty By Nature, had to pay tribute
Salt-N-Pepa reminded us of their mission as women in Hip Hop
But they had one last message
Dej Loaf and Lil Mama threw on some heels and a G-String to honor Lil Kim.
And Diddy came out to honor Kim and to help celebrate her birthday
Betty White asked the most important question in Hip Hop history
Queen Latifah had to remind people why feminism in Hip Hop is important.
And she ended the show by displaying true unity between women in Hip Hop
And that recaps the show! See you next year!
