Rihanna, what can we say about her? She’s a woman who has conquered music, fashion, and beauty. She has become the world’s biggest influence on fashion and one of the world biggest sex symbols, so when the world’s favorite island girl decided to come out with a lingerie line, we were shook and had our coins ready. Promotional shots flooded social media in April and once the lingerie collection was on sale in May, women were racing to look and feel as sexy as Rihanna. This year at New York Fashion Week, Savage x Fenty made its debut and became the most anticipated fashion show.
The show was held at Brooklyn Navy Yard and was designed after a bio-dome, including desert section, a hydroponic greenhouse, and a rotating stage. The set also included models doubling as dancers and actors; while most fashion shows required models to do the standard catwalk presentation, some models danced down the catwalk, two crawled onto the runway, and other models gave their most fierce attitude on the runway.
What stood out to the attendees of the show, as well as those who watched the fashion show while it streamed online, was the model themselves. Rihanna treated her lingerie line much like her Fenty Beauty makeup line, diversity and inclusion was at the forefront. Most of the models used for the show were women of color. The show also put women of all sizes on the runway, tall, skinny, plus size, short, athletic build, curvy, even two putting pregnant models (including Slick Woods). This was a special moment in fashion; this is one of the few shows where the audiences clapped, cheered, and had crowd interaction. This was the fashion show that empowered women, and the confidence within them. Rihanna’s SavagexFenty fashion was the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show young women of color dreamed of seeing...and it came into fruition.
