The MET Gala in 11 Bold Statements

For those (like me) who like to experiment with fashion and go against the grain, there is a fashion event for us, and that event is the MET Gala. In case you've been missing out and haven't been paying attention, the MET Gala is the Coachella of the fashion; it's an event for the bold, the fearless, and the carefree. The annual event is a fundraising for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York City, and this year, the theme was dedicated to Japanese fashion designer Rei Kawakubo and the founding of her avante garde label Comme des Garçons (French for "like some boys").

This year was nothing short of amazing. While some came with classic chic styles and designs, others came ready shock and wow other attendees and viewers across the world. Here are the 11 boldest fashion statements at the MET Gala.

1. Lala

Fresh off the heels of her marital problems, Lala seems to not let that stop her salvage. In a post break up fashion, Lala showed the world she still got it in a see-through Thai Nguyen Atelier gown.

2. Jaden Smith

One of the best examples of #BlackBoyJoy, Jaden came to the MET Gala in a grill, wedged heels and a Louis Vuitton suit. Jaden also showed up with a fresh hair cut and rocking his former locs as an accessory. We are feeling this “I Am Not My Hair” India Arie vibes.

3. Nicki Minaj

Leave it to Nicki to bring the sex appeal and daring fashion as always. In a custom H&M gown, Nicki also paid homage to Rei Kawakubo by wearing a belt with an image of Kawakubo’s face on it.

4. Diddy and Cassie

While Diddy looked good in his Comme des Garçons-inspired suit and Cassie looked amazing in her Aura Tout Vu gown, everyone was in awe when the music mogul sat on the stairs as his boo take center stage and show off her outfit! Diddy later admitted on Twitter, that he sat on the stairs cause he was so tired.

5. Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively

In the spirit of couples on the red carpet, Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively gave us all the shimmer. Reynolds looked dapper in his navy blue suit while Lively looked lovely in a golden Atelier Versace dress with multi-color feathers at the end. Many were in awe of her their outfits.

6. Kerry Washington

Don’t call it a comeback, she’s been slaying for years, but this time there’s something special. Last year, Washington was pregnant at the MET Gala, but this year she stunned everyone by showing off her curves in Michael Kors design with a 1920’s-inspired bob. This was definitely a scandal!

7. The Hadid Sisters

Left: Gigi, Right: Bella

It’s been awhile since we seen a pair of sisters slay. Gigi arrived in a constructed Tommy Hilfiger champagne color gown, while her little sister, Bella, was daring in a see-through Alexander Wang body suit.

8. Kendall Jenner

Speaking of see-through outfits, one of the youngest in the Kardashian/Jenner clan showed she isn’t that little girl anymore. Dawning her sleek body in a Julia Haart dress that was made of just thread and 85,000 crystals, she shows us why she’s one of the top supermodels.

9. Paris Jackson

The daughter of the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson, made her first debut at the MET Gala in a Calvin Klein dress showing off her piercings and tattoos. As she moves forward in the fashion industry, we are excited to see what's to come for the 19-year-old who Vanity Fair deemed the new “It” girl.

10. Zendaya

Leave it to Zendaya to represent for the natural girls. In a colorful Dolce and Gabbana dress, Zendaya was praised for not following the dress code and still winning in her gown. That’s that #BlackGirlMagic

11. Rihanna

“This is what we've been waiting for!”, said by E! Red Carpet correspondent Kristin Cavallari. As always, Rihanna brought her A-Game to the MET Gala carpet, honoring Rei Kawakubo and wearing a Comme des Garçons design, causing a world-wind of praise and admiration from Harper’s Bazaar to TIME Magazine, calling her the Queen of the MET Gala…and she rightfully deserves that title. Another gown in Rihanna’s fashion history book.
