2018 has been the year that tested the strength of Ariana Grande; from the slut-shaming she has endured from Aretha Franklin’s funeral, the break up of her engagement from Pete Davidson to the passing of her former lover, Mac Miller, she’s had a year most people would not be able to handle. While the “God is a Woman” singer has had her bumps in the road, she’s shown she’s able to bounce back with one of the best albums of 2018, Sweetener, and a string of dynamic music videos that bring us so much sass and fashion.
Her latest video that premiered today is no different. For her latest single, “Thank U, Next”, took on the iconic teen comedy and chick flick characters of the 2000s, who ironically all had to deal with crappy boyfriends, or as we call them today “f*ck boys”. She parodied the Plastics from Mean Girls, including the iconic dance to Jingle Bell Rock, a cameo from Kris Jenner, Troye Sivan, and two original cast members from the movie, John Bennett (who played Aaron Samuels) and Stefanie Drummond (who played Bethany Byrd). Mean Girls wasn’t the only movie Grande showed love towards.
Ariana also paid tribute to Bring it On, dressing as the Rancho Carne Toros cheerleaders and other back up dancers dressing as the East Compton Clovers. She later paid tribute to the film 13 Going on 30 and to Legally Blonde where Jennifer Coolidge (who played Paulette Bonafonte) made a cameo, and everyone performed the cherished “bend and snap” dance.
The video has already gotten over 17 million views and has been well received by fans on social media.
