With special thanks to Ebony magazine and the NAACP, last night, Chicago fans of the show, The Get Down, got a special sneak preview at the AMC River East 21 theater, located in the River North area. Made In Stone was there just as excited as everyone else!
In the season one part two opening, Ezekiel "Zeke" Figuero, (portrayed by Justice Smith), is juggling preparing for college, working an office job and performing with the hip-hop group he put together with his friends in season one. The episode also goes into the management of Zeke's group and their financial woes, the potential chemistry between Zeke's DJ, Shaolin Fantastic (portrayed by Shameik Moore), and the mother of Cadillac, the king of the disco world and son of the owner of an infamous night spot in the Bronx. The episode also goes into the rise of Mylene (portrayed by Herizen F. Guardiola), Zeke's girlfriend, and her career, the turmoils and their relationship, and a potential new love interest at Zeke's job.
After the viewing, a Q&A discussion was led by LaToya Cross, Senior Editor of Entertainment and Culture at Ebony magazine, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who plays Cadillac, was there to answer questions asked by Cross and members of the audience. Abdul-Mateen II talked about his experience on set, building his character, filming in New York, getting to meet Nas (who's one of the Executive Producers), and explaining to the audience how he was able to "relive and learn about the roots of hip-hop". At the end, audience members were able to take a group pic with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
The second part of season one The Get Down comes out April 7th on Netflix!
